Description

Hard Maple, most commonly sourced from the Sugar Maple tree (Acer saccharum) or the Black Maple (Acer nigrum), is one of the most popular, durable, and versatile domestic hardwoods in North America. It is often referred to as "Rock Maple" due to its incredible density and strength.

Appearance and Grain

Unlike most other hardwoods where the darker heartwood is highly prized, it is actually the sapwood (the outer rings of the tree) of Hard Maple that is most commonly used in woodworking.

  • Color: The sapwood is generally a crisp, creamy white, sometimes with a slight golden or reddish hue. The heartwood tends to be a darker, reddish-brown.
  • Grain: The grain is generally straight, but it has a fine, even texture.
  • Figuring: Hard Maple is famous for occasionally producing highly sought-after grain patterns, including "birdseye" (small, swirling eyes), "curly" or "tiger" (wavy, 3D stripes), and "quilted" patterns.
