Description

Red Oak is the backbone of American woodworking and home construction. When you picture traditional hardwood floors or classic wooden cabinetry in North America, there is a very good chance you are picturing Red Oak. While "Red Oak" actually refers to a broad group of oak species, the Northern Red Oak (Quercus rubra) is the most commonly harvested.

Key Characteristics

  • Color: The heartwood is a light to medium brown, almost always with a distinct pinkish or reddish cast (hence the name). The sapwood is lighter, ranging from white to light brown, but the transition between the two isn't always sharp.
  • Grain: It has a very prominent, straight grain with a coarse, uneven texture. The growth rings are highly visible, giving the wood a strong, traditional "woody" appearance.
  • Porosity: Red Oak is highly porous. Unlike White Oak (which has closed pores that make it watertight), Red Oak's pores are completely open like tiny straws. In fact, you can actually blow air right through a short section of an end-grain piece!
